Tips for Choosing the Perfect Prom Dress

While many girls spend a lot of time daydreaming about their perfect prom experience, actually trying on dresses and deciding on the right one for you can be a complicated process. There are many factors that go into dress shopping, so you should take the time to think about what you really want and then address those factors before you many any commitments. Dress shopping can be a lot of fun if you have an idea of what will work for you beforehand. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect prom dress.

Consider Your Budget

Some teenage girls have jobs and enough money saved up to buy any dress that they would like, while others have parents that are willing to fork over the dough for the ideal dress. More often, however, teen girls don’t have a lot of cash to spend on a really expensive gown. Before you start shopping, it’s a good idea to sit down with your parents and decide on how much you will be able to spend on your prom dress. If you are prepared and can even tell the sales people how much you are willing to spend, then you will avoid being disappointed by the cost of a dress.

Consider Your Body Type

All dresses are not created equal and some styles look more flattering on certain body types. Take a good look at yourself and figure out what your body type is so that you can narrow down your search to cuts and styles that will look good on you. Shorter girls may want to avoid short evening dresses, as they may make them look shorter. A taller girl may be able to wear short prom dresses more easily, but a very narrow, long dress may make them look even taller. Don’t worry about trying to fit in a certain dress just because it is in style. You will look better if you shop for your own body.

Consider Your Date

If you aren’t sure exactly what style of prom dress that you would like to wear, you can consider your date and what they are planning on wearing. Some boys like the look of formal tuxedos, which would pair best with a more formal, floor-length dress. On the other hand, some guys prefer wearing a simple suit and tie for a more casual look. You can get away with wearing short evening dresses with his laid back look, as they lend well to the casual style. You want to look as though you are a couple at the dance, so trying to match can be a fun way to add an extra level of togetherness.

Consider the Weather

Some schools hold prom in the early spring when the weather is still chilly, so a strapless dress may not provide enough coverage to keep you warm during the times that you may be outside. Sleeveless and strapless dresses are extremely popular for prom, but if you want a little bit more coverage you could try a long-sleeved dress. Not only will you be warmer than your classmates, but you will have a more unique dress that doesn’t look like everyone else’s.
